Interesting Sights at Menorca

By Spanje Vakantiehuize at 2013-03-01 05:32:28
South Menorca is known as the Migjorn which has plenty of fine white sand that makes it so attractive to holidaymakers; both locals and tourists. There are plenty of pine woods surrounding the region with vast fertile vegetation. North Menorca is known as La Tramuntana; it is a steeper region filled with challenging rocks but of great beauty as a natural landscape.

Exploring towns

The capital of Menorca is Mahón. There is plenty to see and do in and around the Menorca capital. Villacarlos is a quaint village with just 4500 inhabitants with British architecture reflecting the British influence once upon a time. There are excellent bays to explore or spend some tranquil moments alone or with loved ones.  These natural bays lie close by to another equally popular spot in Menorca; the Albufera des Grau natural park with a natural and beautiful lake that is a haven to 150 feathered species besides the myriad of exotic flora and fauna residing there.

From Menorca, tourists can enjoy another great sight with Es Colom Island which is about 200m away. This French town of Sant Lluis lies in the south with splendid beaches and bays. Cala Alcaufar is highly urbanized while Punta Prima and Cala d'es Rafalet sport fine white sand.

The town of Torret has plenty of simple quaint white houses that are the typical architectural representations of Menorca. Another interesting sight is the hippies’ colony at Calas Covas with residents in caves and transistor radios for global contact.

Although Alaior may be just a small town on Menorca, it is an industrious town with its own vibrant shoe production. There are many 17th and 18th century manorial houses with whitewashed walls with narrow lanes that make this town historical. There are many interesting pre-historical remnants around town; this includes taulas and talayots and ancient settlements.

The exotic town of Mercadal stands majestic on Monte Toro’s foothills. This is Menorca’s highest mountain of 357 meters which offers one of the most panoramic views with a splendid Ionic-Byzanthinian church that sports wonderful wall paintings.

Beach offerings

Menorca is one of the bigger islands amongst the Balearic Islands with plenty of great beaches all around. Near these well kept beaches are colorful and quaint villages which sport active fishing ports as fishing is still a major activity and livelihood of many islanders today.

There is also the awesome cave of Cueva Na Pulida that showcases natural beauty in its display of stalagmites and stalactites.
